Crafting Handmade Paper from Plants
Workshop Overview: Explore the art of hand papermaking by discovering the ideal plant materials and techniques involved.
In this course, participants will:
1)Begin by selecting raw materials.
2)Learn cooking, beating and sheet formation using basic equipment.
3) Experiment with creative techniques for producing high quality papers and artworks.
Experience the complete cycle of creation, from raw fibers to finished projects, with feedback provided for each project. The workshop will be both theoretical and practical, with opportunities for watching, asking questions, and engaging in debates during class sessions. Participants will have time between classes to practice the techniques demonstrated.

In this all-inclusive, two-week, workshop held at the International Center for the Arts at Monte Castello (www.icaitaly.com) in Umbria Italy, September 22 - October 6, 2024, we will explore the potential of paper as a basic material and as a medium for artistic pursuits.
The event will be led by internationally known instructors Amanda Degener, founder of Cave Paper; Carol Barton of Popular Kinetics; Denise Carbone from the University of the Arts and Tom Balbo of Tom Balbo Galleries. The Workshop will also feature a two-day pulp-painting component, led by Visiting Artist, Roberto Mannino. Participants will receive 12 hours of instruction in each of these areas: hand papermaking, pulp paper painting and marbling, sewn bookbindings, and designing pop-ups.
From the time our staff greets you at the Rome Airport (FCO) to the time we return you to the airport and say farewell, all expenses are included. You'll be staying in our medieval hilltown in a 14th c. convent, with spectacular views of the Tiber Valley. Dining is on our outdoor terrace and you'll be treated to three, multiple course, meals per day lovingly prepared by our chef and kitchen staff. We start the day with an incredible breakfast buffet, then lunch and dinner, which are served in courses and arrive at the table plted and accompanied by excellent local wine.
The workshop will also include field trips to the Fabriano Paper Mill and to the city of Florence, along with several other excursion stops. In addition, Amanda will be offering optional morning Tai Chi sessions. This is an ideal session for teachers, graphic designers, creative artists, and anyone who likes to play with paper. No prior experience is necessary; all skill levels are welcome.

Eco Sculpture Workshops with environmental artists Jan Alison Edwards BA PGDip and Fiona Campbell, MRSS. Complementing the Elemental Exhibition, 19th October – 10th November2024 on the JURASSIC COAST DORSET UK. Jurassic Coast, Dorset, UK.
An all day or weekend sculpture workshop to create nature-inspired sculptural work/s using found and recycled materials. Focused on assemblage sculpture, constructing rather than carving away, you will explore line, form, colour, texture, spatial relationships and the concept of transformation, using a range of 3-d skills. The aim is to explore and experiment with creative ideas, processes and media (industrial and organic), and develop new skills including wirework and paper making techniques. You will be encouraged to be resourceful, experimental and improvisational with the sculpture making, gain confidence, and complete one or a series of small sculptures. Materials provided will include recycled wire, wood/natural debris, paper, metal, textiles, and miscellaneous components.
Suitable for artists and students who wish to develop a more sustainable practice.
Weekend or day courses available between the exhibition dates.

The workshop takes place from November 06, 2024 until November 06, 2024.
In this workshop, you will be guided in creating a stunning relief using pyramid-like paper components inspired by Larigami No. 1. You can personalize the color, size, and arrangement of the pieces to suit your creative vision.
Each shape is carefully cut, folded, and glued by hand. This process is repeated multiple times, as each relief is composed of many individual pieces. The activity is very relaxing—almost meditative. Once all the pieces are ready, the relief is arranged and assembled. Depending on the desired size, you can also expand and complete it at home.
The price includes: cutting templates (available as a PDF upon request), high-quality paper in various colors, an A3 base and glue.
Please bring: scissors and a bone folder (if you have one).

This class is based on the Fused & Formed workshop with attention given to the how-to’s of three-dimensional design, surface embellishment and mould making.
During the two-day ONLINE workshop, you will learn how to make beautifully textured paper with flax roving and create shape by making a mould with wire mesh and plaster cloth. You will also focus on embellishing the surface with thread, ink and decorative paper.

Karen Olson will be teaching this 5-day workshop in Searsport, Maine this fall. The model for this workshop is a bit different than most. There will be plenty of time for one-on-one consultation and mentoring, walks along the shore, and meaningful discussion. And, of course, lots of learning, but at a slower pace.
