This online class is designed for individuals who are self motivated to learn Japanese papermaking in a private independent study format, without having to wait for a group event. Detailed lessons and dozens of video demonstrations are made available every few days to allow students to work at their own pace.
Participants can take this class at any time and from any location [with internet access] and learn all of the processes involved in how to make Japanese-style nagashizuki-style paper, including identifying the plant itself, harvesting, steaming, stripping and scraping off the outer bark to gain access to the beautiful inner bast fiber, cooking, hand beating, rinsing/cleaning, mixing neri (formation aid), preparing the vat and finally forming sheets of paper. These steps will be followed with pressing and drying as well as a few extra contemporary creative techniques. Along the way, you will learn a little science about the fiber to have a better understanding of the material.
Lessons and materials are available for several months to provide time to work through it all. Price includes 2 hours of private consultation [by appointment].
