Flax Fiber in 3D is a comprehensive and creative 3-day in-studio workshop experience designed for those eager to delve into the intricate art of making stunning sculptures using flax fiber paper and a variety of natural materials. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the fascinating nature of flax fiber paper, gain hands-on experience in mould making, and experiment with unique inclusions that enhance their artistic creations. Shaping Space w/ Flax Fiber Paper

Learn how to create stunning three-dimensional fiber sculpture during this engaging two-day ONLINE workshop. You will have the opportunity to transform natural flax roving into beautiful, richly textured paper, which you can then apply over a mould that you create using materials such as wire, plaster cloth, wire mesh, or cordage. Once dried, the sculpture can be further embellished with ink and stitching techniques to enhance its beauty. Additionally, inclusions like colorful thread or organic plant material can be added during the papermaking process to provide extra depth and texture.
This workshop is thoughtfully designed to include a combination of live demonstrations, group discussions, and an interactive creative process during each session, allowing time for you to work on your individual projects between sessions. The workshop meets from 9 AM to 1 PM MST each day via Zoom, providing a convenient online format. Please consider registering early to ensure that you have ample time to gather all the materials needed for the workshop. Upon registration, a comprehensive materials list will be emailed to you along with the Zoom link. All skill levels are welcome, so come and unleash your creativity!

In this workshop you will learn step by step how to create a fascinating relief using pyramid-like paper modules, inspired by Larigami No. 1. You can customize the color, size, and arrangement according to your preferences. Through precise cutting, folding, and gluing, you will gradually assemble numerous small components that come together to form an impressive artwork. The meditative process invites you to relax creatively. At the end of the workshop, you will arrange and mount your relief, which you can continue expanding at home if desired.

Karen Olson is teaching again at Fiber College in Searsport, Maine. The theme for her workshop is "Connect With Your Wild Side."
During the retreat, participants will harvest sustainable plants from the edges of the landscape and from the garden for art-making. They will learn to make paper from these materials and discover how to determine whether a plant is suitable for making strong paper. Using wet sheets and pulp, participants will learn to sculpt, emboss, cast, and incorporate natural fibers to create three-dimensional works of art. Many techniques for sculpting dry papers will also be explored. Dyes and pigments will be on hand to color your paper. A selection of commercially available fibers and Japanese papers will also be available to add to your creations or to digitally print if you desire.
