Connect with nature on an intimate level and explore methods of self-expression with natural materials and sustainable practices. You will learn concepts and methods for making paper from readily available materials in your environment and learn techniques for the home studio. Delve into the world of oriental papers and learn to print digitally on handmade papers. A variety of paper sculpture techniques both ancient and modern will be demonstrated and incorporated into your own sculptural pieces as you explore a variety of means for working three-dimensionally.

Karen Olson will be teaching this 5-day workshop in Searsport, Maine this fall. The model for this workshop is a bit different than most. There will be plenty of time for one-on-one consultation and mentoring, walks along the shore, and meaningful discussion. And, of course, lots of learning, but at a slower pace.

In this workshop, you will learn how to create an amazing relief with pyramid-like paper components under guidance, similar to Larigami No. 1. Color, size, and arrangement can be varied individually and creatively. The individual shapes are cut out, folded, and glued by hand. This part of the process is repeated, as each relief consists of numerous individual bodies. It is very relaxing – almost like meditation. Afterwards, the relief is arranged and assembled. Depending on the desired size, it can also be expanded and completed at home.

The price includes: cutting patterns (also available as a PDF upon request), high-quality paper in several colors, DIN-A3 base, glue.

Please bring: scissors, bone folder (if available).

Maps are symbolic guides from the known to the unknown. They describe patterns of movement, occurrence, and migration, and tell stories of places past, present, and future. During this class, designed for all levels, we will explore various ways that mapping can be combined with embroidery to make unique works of art. You will begin with a meditation on land and place and introductions to different types of embroidered cartography and symbolism. Then you'll explore ways to transfer images to fabric, a plethora of embroidery stitches, and how best to realize each participant's idea from vision to textile. Students will depart this workshop with an embroidered map of their own, which could be incorporated into a garment or pillow, or framed as a work of art.

Workshop Details

In this workshop, you will explore hand papermaking, watermarks, and material metaphor. Watermarks are a hand papermaking technique in which the fibers of the paper are interrupted, creating an absence in the paper. When the papers are backlit, a ghostly image appears. This technique is an exquisite material metaphor for dealing with loss, extinction, and disappearance, while also being magical and alluding to transformation. Using various types of watermark techniques – including cut vinyl, puff paint, layered paper, and hand embroidery, you will explore the imagery of solastalgia – feelings of disquiet and discomfort due to environmental change such as global warming - and revitalization. Students will leave this workshop with a series of handmade papers that can stand on their own as works of art, or be incorporated into collages, artists books, or prints.

The Summer Institute at Wells College, situated on more than 300 scenic acres overlooking Cayuga Lake in central New York, attracts a mix of experienced book artists and those new to the field from all over. Offered are 4 - 6 classes concurrently in each session in letterpress, bookbinding, calligraphy, papermaking, paper decoration, risograph, and related arts.

This workshop explores the art of using pigmented pulps to create highly textured and colorful 2D works of art. In this five-day workshop, students will explore pulp-painting techniques using cotton and abaca fibers. Pigmenting, painting techniques using a variety of tools and applications, multiple layering techniques, and beating times to control textures and shrinkage properties of the different fibers will be covered in this intensive workshop. Through slide presentations featuring handmade paper art by a variety of artists, and daily demonstrations by the instructor, students will become familiar with handmade paper artwork and the many artists who work in this ancient yet contemporary medium.

Join Silvia Turbiner for four weekly sessions of 2 hours each in English.

This online course will be conducted via Zoom, and all sessions will be recorded. You'll have the flexibility to watch the class and work at your own pace and time, with the freedom to ask questions whenever you need.

In this course, you'll learn to create a concertina book using fresh handmade cotton linters paper. You'll explore techniques such as collage with graphic inks, inlay fusion, transfers, and inclusions, as well as how to make a large handmade paper with hinges. Get ready to master incredible techniques!

Course Outline: Session 1: Introduction to artist books
· Experimenting with graphic oily inks dissolved in turpentine on a tray of water and transferring the result to handmade papers, book pages, newspapers, etc.

Session 2: Re-signifying the creations from the first class

Session 3: Crafting an accordion book with the re-signified results on both the front and back covers simultaneously, using handmade paper, likely cotton linters

In this workshop taught by IAPMA member Michelle Wilson, students will be introduced to the process of making Japanese paper, or washi. Japanese paper, often incorrectly referred to as rice paper, is known for its great strength while appearing delicate and gossamer-thin. Students will learn the basics of preparing their own fiber, hand beating, and forming sheets in the traditional nagashizuki method. Students will take home wet sheets to dry at home with instructions.

Washi paper is versatile and can be used for numerous applications – writing, printmaking, chine colle, collage, bookbinding, digital printing, paper sculpture – you name it! The class will also touch on how to make washi at home.

In this online course with IAPMA member @silviaturbiner, participants are going to learn different weaving techniques, handmade paper from two to three dimensions and new materials to work with. Each session is designed to develop a relationship with natural materials. She will guide you through the process of weaving twigs, wire, chicken mesh, rattan and handmade paper into sculpture. We will twist, interlock and weave in multiple directions ; the works will appear to be simultaneously line and volume.


Suggested Materials:
A wooden frame (A4 is a good size)and nails. Tools needed after the first session. Depending on your geographic location: wicker, vines, willow vines, palm inflorenscences, wire, rope, chicken and bird mesh, cables,    etc. Styrofoam molds: spheres, cubes and foam rubber sheets. You will learn how to make molds. You can use all sorts of wire: copper, brass or aluminum. Fibers: Kozo, corn, agave, abaca, cotton pulps and any already handmade paper. You can buy your paper if you are not used to making it.

When we work sculpturally, we gain a profound understanding of how perspective can transform and shift in response to the interplay of light and the angle from which we observe our creations. This powerful fact serves as a metaphor for the intricacies and ever-changing nature of life itself. By skillfully manipulating various elements and incorporating them into a multi-dimensional layered sculpture, we are able to effectively convey the intricate and multifaceted layers that constitute our unique life experiences.

In this class, students will learn a variety of methods to strengthen and sculpt paper. Ancient oriental practices will be discussed and demonstrated as well as innovative techniques with natural materials. A variety of alternatives for armature will be shown. A collection of mixed papers and fibers will be available for you to create your own artwork in class. Please feel free to bring your own prints, elements, or artworks you would like to incorporate in your sculpture.

Join IAPMA Member Michelle Wilson - this workshop is for any student interested in using handmade paper to create sculptural forms with armatures. Students will learn building methods for armatures and ways to wrap and dip their armatures in handmade paper prepared in a way that is called "high shrinkage". In this method, paper pulp has been beaten for a long period of time to absorb a large amount of water, and dramatic transformations can occur when the form dries.

Workshop Details

A box is a wonderful container but it is so much more in the hands of an artist.  It provides many surfaces for embellishment, collage, stitching and story-telling.  The form also happily lends itself to many sculptural possibilities.  A custom made box is a beautiful way to present and contain something special.

Students will learn several ways to make boxes as well as how to make reusable patterns for their specific projects. We will explore some decorative paper techniques as well as collage and hand-stitching. Using some of these same techniques we will make a Japanese-inspired triangle bag that can fold flat and learn how it can also be the basis for another sculptural box form.

This class is open to all levels of experience including no experience!

Workshop Details

This course is about learning which plants are ideal to work with for hand paper making. You will begin with a selection of raw plant materials and learn methods of cooking, beating and sheet formation using basic equipment. You will also experiment with creative techniques to create good quality papers and artworks. One of the techniques will be with a frame that is wrapped tightly with thread or wire and then dipped in various pulp fibers to create thin sheets or works in 3D.

A project will be created with every fiber with feedback offered.
During class participants will watch, ask and debate. Between clases you will work with the techniques that you have watched.

 Class limit is 6 participants. Sessions will be recorded.

Paper is an amazing material with the potential to be structurally strong or flexible and soft, opaque or translucent, a base for drawings and paintings, a sculptural form or bound into books for writing and illustrations. In this session we will explore the potential of paper as a basic material and as a medium for artistic pursuits. This two-week session will be led by internationally known instructors Amanda Degener, founder of Cave Paper, Carol Barton of Popular Kinetics, Denise Carbone from the University of the Arts, and Tom Balbo of Tom Balbo Galleries.

Students will be signing up for the complete session, with sixteen hours of instruction in each area: hand papermaking, pulp paper painting and marbling, sewn bookbindings, and designing pop-ups. The session will also include field trips to the Fabriano Paper Mill and to the city of Florence, along with several other excursion stops. In addition, Amanda will be offering optional morning Tai Chi sessions.

This is an ideal session for teachers, graphic designers, creative artists, and anyone who likes to play with paper. No prior experience is necessary; all skill levels are welcome.

Throughout the workshop, participants will be housed in the remarkably well-preserved Umbrian hill town of Monte Castello di Vibio. Your workshop package is all-inclusive, providing welcome and departure services and airport transfer from the Rome Fiumicino, Leonardo Da Vinci Airport (FCO). Aboard our comfortable private bus, single occupancy accommodations with shared bath (a wide range of upgrades with private bath are available), 3 meals per day Monday-Thursday, Prosecco brunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday (no meals are served on Friday, our excursion day. A box is a wonderful container but it is so much more in the hands of an artist. It provides many surfaces for embellishment, collage, stitching and story-telling. It also lends itself to many sculptural possibilities.

This two-week workshop is divided between two interrelated disciplines: papermaking and printmaking.

In the first week, renowned Italian American paper artist and educator, Roberto Mannino, will introduce the basics of hand papermaking. Participants will learn how to create unique papers from virgin, high quality fibers like cotton, linen, and abaca. Color laminations, transparencies and pulp painting effects will support your creativity in composing sheets up to A3 size. Since these papers will be internally sized, they will be rewetted to better retain inks and embossing under the etching press.

In the second week, several alternative printmaking methods will be introduced, with the central focus of first developing imagery with paper as the substrate, then further printing over it:

• direct monotype with Akua and Calico water-based inks
• relief printmaking from thin plexiglass plates with Dremel electric engraving and texture marks, and various methods to make a Collagraph plate
• The above will be printed both as an Intaglio plate and as a relief

This class is based on the Fused & Formed workshop taking a deeper dive into the how-to’s of three dimensional design, surface embellishment and armature building. During the two-day online workshop we’ll focus on transforming flax roving into beautiful textured paper to be applied to an armature, such as rattan or foraged materials. Join artist Michell Wilson at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station, CA, for a 2-day workshop. The workshop will meet from 10 am to 4 pm each day.

Flax from Chico Flax (https://chicoflax.com) will be used as the basis for handmade paper sculptures. Students will learn building methods for armatures and ways to wrap their armatures in handmade paper prepared in a way that is called "high shrinkage." In this method, paper pulp has been beaten for a long period of time to absorb a large amount of water, and dramatic transformations can occur when the form dries. 

Materials will be provided, but please feel free to bring interesting sticks, wire, basketry materials, thread, etc., that you may want to incorporate into your experiments. Papermaking is a wet process, please wear clothing and shoes that can get wet. Papermaking also involves some lifting and arm movements.

Tuition Scholarships & Transportation/Childcare Stipends: Fibershed is offering two scholarships to most workshops; one scholarship if it’s a small class. In addition to scholarships for tuition, we are offering a limited number of stipends for transportation and/or childcare. If you would not otherwise be able to attend, and would like to be considered as a scholarship and/or stipend recipient, please answer a few brief questions on this Google Form. During this Live & Interactive online workshop you will learn a how to make contemporary textured paper with flax roving using a fusing technique similar to felting but without agitation. Use your beautiful paper to create sculpture by casting the paper with found moulds or a mould you create.

Flax fiber paper can be used with book art techniques; it can painted with inks and stains, encaustic and used as a substrate for stitching. A materials list will be emailed to you once you have registered so that you can gather the appropriate items.

This course is about learning which plants are ideal to work with for hand paper making. You will begin with a selection of raw plant materials and learn methods of cooking, beating and sheet formation using basic equipment. You will also experiment with creative techniques to create good quality papers and artworks. One of the techniques will be with a frame that is wrapped tightly with thread or wire and then dipped in various pulp fibers to create thin sheets or works in 3D.

A complete cycle of creation, from raw fibers to pulps to final projects will be your experience. A project will be created with every fiber with feedback offered. It will be theoretical and practical. During class participants will watch, ask and debate. Between classes you will work with the techniques that you have watched.

Class limit is 6 participants.
