Butterfly-wing paper is a technique developed by the teaching artist in which a frame is wrapped tightly with thread and then dipped in various pulp fibers to create thin sheets with thread inclusions (or thread embedded in the paper). There are endless possibilities to explore with this unique technique–threads can be woven, different kinds of pulp create various interesting effects with translucency and opacity, and frames can be designed to create specific patterns. Students will learn this papermaking technique, as well as how to use natural pigments to add color while experimenting with different kinds of pulp. You will also experiment with a technique called “Cloud paper” or reverse pulp painting, where layers of pulp are applied by hand to a backing sheet, allowed to dry, and then carefully peeled away.  It is possible to make extremely thin sheets of paper, with a variety of interesting effects this way.  Neither of these techniques requires a press or a dry box, making them accessible to people without access to those tools.  

Students will complete one small finished work of butterfly wing paper, and cloud paper, as well as many small experimental samples. All levels welcome – no experience necessary

This workshop is a four-part live interactive online intensive!

Join Jacqueline Mallegni on a journey of exploration through the art of making sculpture with natural materials at her Live & Interactive Online Fiber Sculpture Session.

Each session is designed to enliven your art practice by developing a relationship with natural materials and foraging. She will personally guide you through the process of transforming paper, sticks, thread and imagination into sculpture. You will learn how to transform flax roving into non-traditional paper; learn how to make a mould; cast fiber paper into sculpture; process kozo fiber for sculpture; build an armature with natural materials; learn how to make plant based stains.

This series is designed to include the content that would normally be offered in a 4 day in-person workshop. The processes covered are slow, needing time to develop between stages. A materials list will be emailed to you once you have registered so that you can gather appropriate items. A Zoom link will be emailed a week before the class.

In this online course with IAPMA member Silvia Turbiner participants are going to learn different weaving techniques, handmade paper from two to three dimensions and new materials to work with. You will twist, interlock and weave; the works will appear to be simultaneously line and volume. The making process will become a kind of discovery. During class participants will watch, ask and debate. Between clases you will work with the techniques that you have watched.

Materials needed for class: A wooden frame (A4 is a good size)and nails. Tool needed after the first sesión. Have on hand wicker, vines, willow vines, palm inflorensces,wire, rope, chicken and bird mesh, cables, etc. Strofoam moulds: spheres, cubes and foam rubber sheets. We can use all sorts of wire: copper, brass or aluminum. Kozo, corn, agave, abaca, cotton pulps and fibers and any handmade paper. You can buy your paper if you are not used to making it.

It is being specially opened for this workshop as it is usually closed to the public at this time of year. Included in the workshop is a tour of the house by a National Trust guide. This is an in-person class at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts in Minneapolis, MN.  

Add color to handmade paper with natural pigments! On day one of this in-person workshop, begin with a review or introduction to basic European sheet formation, followed by instruction on how to extract lake pigments from natural dye vats using soda ash and alum. On the second day, spend the morning learning how to integrate mineral earth pigments and the lake pigments into pulp using retention aid. Then, pulling sheets of western-style papers in rich, natural hues ranging from oranges and yellows to light and dark reds and grays. If time allows, use citric acid and iron solutions to shift the colors of the papers. Participants will come away with a portfolio of colorful paper and a basic understanding of the papermaking process. Please wear clothing that can get dirty and shoes that can get wet (i.e. rubber boots, garden clogs, etc.).

The lab is an open space workshop that allows all participants to personally process ideas, inspiration, and images with guidance and attention from the instructor. The laboratory is open to artists from any field with an attraction to internal research, creations in paper, and the world of materials close to it.

We will learn to connect different layers of time and composition, explore layers and subtleties that reflect the process unique to you, and create an authentic manuscript in the material. We will also learn expression in the material, an in-depth familiarity with paper, to work in a variety of techniques.

Simplicity, logic, and hard work are the main foundations that I expose participants to in my workshops, a process in which you will receive tools to develop language and personal approach to the material, release the creative power and expand your toolbox and access to the material.

Free motion embroidery on a variety of materials and mixed media.
Multi-layered and three-dimensional embroidered standalone objects.
Creating fabrics from different materials - creating alternative fabrics from residual materials, organic materials or various fibers.
Processing different materials on a sewing machine: punching, soldering paper, paper felting, and alternative printing techniques.

The humble sewing machine is considered by many a mere tool used in the craft of sewing. In fact, it offers artistic freedom and expression in the creation process. In this workshop we will explore the many possibilities in using the sewing machine as a multidisciplinary tool. We will delve into free, machine, and floating embroidery on a multitude of materials, making multi-dimensional images and textures in a size of your choosing. Finally, we will solidify the materials and make assemblage of your creations.

The workshop is intended for participants familiar with the use and control of a sewing machine, beginners are welcome. The classes are based on a theoretical study of different techniques and demonstrations of how to make them, therefore, time is set aside in the workshop to practice the techniques and various experiments in materials.The participants may choose to come with their sewing machine to the workshop or make all the preparatory work at the workshop and leave the execution as homework. Participation in the workshop involves homework between sessions and a preparatory conversation with Guy before the workshop begins.

IAPMA Member Michelle Wilson (@michellewilsonprojects) will teach this upcoming class - for any student interested in using handmade paper to create sculptural forms with armatures. Students will learn building methods for armatures and ways to wrap and dip their armatures in handmade paper pulp prepared in a way that is called "high shrinkage". In this method, paper pulp has been beaten for a long period of time to absorb a large amount of water, and dramatic transformations can occur when the form dries. Papermaking is a wet process, please wear clothing and shoes that can get wet. Papermaking also involves some lifting and arm movements.

The second workshop will be about 3D object making from abaca and kozo fibre. You will prepare kozo pulp as well. The third workshop will involve pulp painting. You will prepare special pulp from some native plants on the property with a large garden space in order to make interesting accents in our artwork.

In this workshop, students will be introduced to the process of making Japanese paper. Japanese paper, often incorrectly referred to as rice paper, is known for its great strength while appearing delicate and gossamer-thin. In this workshop, students will learn the basics of preparing their own fiber, hand beating, and forming sheets in the traditional nagashizuki method. Students will take home wet sheets to dry at home with instructions. Papermaking is a wet process, please wear clothing and shoes that can get wet. Papermaking also involves some lifting and arm movements.

In this two day IN PERSON workshop, participants will work with high-shrinkage flax and abaca pulps, learning basic sheet forming, methods for inclusions, and stretching sheets over constructed armatures. Flax and abaca fibers can make extremely thin, strong, and translucent sheets of paper. These are ideal for embedding two-dimensional imagery but are also prized for their ability to shrink as they dry, creating a taut, smooth surface when the paper is applied over an armature. Students will form two-dimensional sheets of paper and will be guided through constructing basic armatures of their own design. This workshop will cover how to make paper from scratch (starting with the local plant materials such as leaves and bark) with minimal equipment and facilities. The emphasis will be on creative problem solving and creative use of materials to make unique handmade paper art, using sustainable methods and materials that do not harm the environment. Students will learn that papermaking art can be created successfully with ordinary household equipment and materials that you can find in your own backyard. 

Some pulps that the instructor will bring to supplement the ones found in the local area will also be used in the workshop, such as kozo and abaca. The instructor will introduce unique techniques (Japanese/Asian and Western) that she has developed from her experiences as an artist in residence in Japan, Taiwan, Tanzania, Indonesia, Nepal, Japan, Brazil, Thailand, China, England, Turkey and the Philippines as well as at art centers and nature parks in the USA.

Flax is among the oldest fiber crops in the world, the use of flax for linen going back nearly 10,000 years. Short fibers called tow are a byproduct of flax processing, and can be used in papermaking. We will learn how the fiber is prepared for making paper — from its harvest to the workshop — as well as how to form our own sheets of handmade paper using a mold and deckle, and how to press and dry our papers.

The class offered through the Fibershed Learning Center at Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station, CA, (Address provided upon registration) with returning instructor Michelle Wilson. Class is limited to 15 students.

Students will be taking home wet sheets of paper to dry at home. Please bring a roll of paper towels to carry your wet sheets of paper home on.
This will be a wet class, please wear clothing and shoes that can get wet. The class will include some lifting.

EXTREME Hand Papermaking! by Jane Ingram Allen

This workshop with Michelle Wilson runs in the evenings of March 22 and March 24, 2022 from 6 to 8 pm, at the San Francisco Center for the Book.

Embroidery is traditionally practiced on fabric; however, it can be an extraordinary and surprising way to embellish prints, photographs, or even artist books.
In this two-session workshop with Michelle Wilson, you will begin by looking at examples of artists who embroider on paper, and then move on to a discussion of the necessary delicacy and techniques for stitching on paper, selecting appropriate papers, and will conclude with the creation of a an embroidered paper “sampler”. 
In the second class, students will fold a simple accordion with pop-ups, and explore three-dimensional applications to embroidery on paper. Students will leave the class with the beginnings of an embroidered artist book to complete on their own time. 
No experience with embroidery or bookbinding necessary. 

This is an in-person workshop. All students and the instructor are required to be vaccinated (honor system) and agree to wear a mask for the duration of the class. If you choose to complete the registration process you are agreeing to these terms.

The Paper Mill in Duszniki had been erected prior to 1562 and its first recorded owner was Ambrosius Tepper. During the flood in 1601 the paper mill suffered partial destruction. The contemporary owner, Gregor Kretschmer, reconstructed the plant and resumed the production of paper.
The celebration takes place in the courtyard of the Museum of Papermaking in Duszniki-Zdrój (entrance from the Sprzymierzonych st.). Part of the program is a presentation of permanent and temporary exhibitions, a demonstration of creating and decorating paper, a demonstration of making masks from paper, handcraft and stalls with local delicacies.
