Paper, natural materials as well as found and used objects, often paper as well.
These are my main materials. I sew them onto canvas and paper, well-sorted and arranged, hundreds of them or thousands.
As I work with these materials I get to understand: Nothing stays the same.
Nothing at all.
Everything changes.
Always.
Ceaselessly.
Transition and change should thus be the most normal thing for us humans. Just as normal as breathing is.
But the opposite is true: Transition scares us, we try to oppose or avoid it. Or we try to ignore it.
How is this possible?
Thoughts like this drive me to work.
I observe transition, I try to find traces of change.
In paper pieces which tell a story, in things from nature. I find smallest details.
Manifestations of transition.
Old and forgotten wallpaper, faded, withered, discarded.
Shredded bank notes.
Photographs.
Very often I turn to the smallest of the parts, I gather, collect and arrange.
I slow down.
The background becomes the stage.
On paper, canvas, fabric I invent new ways and patterns for my messages.
Hundredfold, thousandfold I sew these elements on. Each piece separately, by hand.
I stand in the history of old artisanry, slow and thorough, but in our digital and fast times. I enjoy the process.
And my heart opens up:
I am astonished by the details I observe, and by the differences I find in things that seem to be the same.
Every sinlgle piece turns out to be a unique individual.
I often need to be gentle so that none of my delicate protagonists get damaged in the process.
Each find gets its own special spot, its own attention and time.
The geometric order hints to a new order. It generates attention and draws the eye to details.
The process behind the work becomes visible, the time that goes into the process can be seen and felt.
Working with these pieces and parts grounds me, unites me with them and lets me understand:
Only what I take in consciously I can really understand and love.
Only what I really notice and embrace I can begin to love.
Only what I notice, understand or love I want to protect and preserve.
And thus my world changes.
Gradually.
Stitch by stitch.
