Since 2004 I've been experimenting with the art of transforming plants into paper using a traditional chinese method. I love immersing myself in the plant matter right from the moment of harvesting: chestnut, yucca, horsetail, micocoulier, iris, ivy and reeds invite my hands to the task, initiating me in their secrets.
Once extracted by cooking in an ash bath, the fibres join up in the water in the 'tamis' (the paper making frames) revealing forms and textures. They provide me with a natural material, very much alive, out of the ordinary, inspiring...
As a paper artist I use these vegetable fibres to create ethereal sculptures, objects that can be worn such as hats or costumes, or 'books'.
These creations come to me sequentially - each one birthing the next - a trail of chrysalis type objects, testimony to the impermanence of living forms: one moment inhabited, precious, then, all of a sudden, obsolete, discarded.
They show the way, to the closest we can get to that edge, just beneath the skin, where we may catch a glimpse of the strange, the unknown...
Sometimes the paper allies itself with the writing, then it becomes the place where content and form question each other.
