FEBRUARY - MEET THE IAPMA TEAM ☀️ WEB EDITOR - KAREN OLSON ☀️ The IAPMA Board members would like to introduce themselves and give you insights into their inspirational artwork as well as their voluntary work at IAPMA to serve you. Each month one or two Board members will talk about their work, their art and topics they are interested in, which might interest you as well. We start here with Karen Olson, who has been our Web Editor since June 2022. The Newsletter Editor Ziya was in conversation with her recently ... ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ Karen, please share with us what your paper art journey has been and why Paper speaks to your artistic practice, more than other media. My paper art journey began with a desire to take my photography into a 3-dimensional space. I wanted to create translucent and ethereal pieces that the viewer could physically and emotionally interact with. To accomplish my vision, I began to explore Japanese papers of many types for digital prints. I also devised unique processes to sculpt paper. In the last couple of years, I have incorporated techniques such as Momigami and Joomchi into my practice and continue to learn much about oriental papers. I have experimented with making my own paper and find the entire process delightful and intriguing. It is my desire to expand my knowledge and skill by meeting and studying with many of our members. ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ How long have you been a part of IAPMA? We are so glad to have you as web editor on the IAPMA Team. I have been a part of IAPMA since May 2022. I had been interested in the organization for more than a year and was given a membership as a gift. Literally the next day after I became a member the call for web editor went out. I immediately applied. I saw it as a way to expand my art practice, support an awesome non-profit, and become part of a global art community. ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ Would you like to share with our members the changes you have inspired with the website and what others you may have coming in the future? Since our website is really the focal point of our global community, we are so grateful for the professional and informative nature of our website. I have been teaching artists how to set up and manage their own websites for many years. Using the skills I have gained as a photographer and graphic designer enables me to mentor others and help them craft an online presence. I have made it my business to understand how people navigate sites, what makes people stay and explore or click away and how the overall mechanics of a site contributes to the viewers experience. I have made suggestions to simplify the website and make it more visually dynamic. We are hoping to have a featured artist page on the website soon. Small changes will be made early in 2023 and a full over hall sometime after 2024. IAPMA’s website handles all the necessary business for the organization and is specifically designed for our needs. Our webmaster Lukas Rögner is the person who makes necessary changes to the website. As web-editor, I publish member exhibitions and workshops, publish open calls, and help members create an informative gallery page. ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ ⌘ Is there anything else you would like to share with us, Karen? What I really love is how each decision you make to expand your artistic practice opens a door and then opens another. Becoming a member and a part of the IAPMA board has benefited me in ways I could never have imagined. We often live and work in isolation as artists, which is why I determined at the beginning of 2022 to look for an organization I could not only be a part of but also support and contribute to. If we are to keep art alive and at the forefront of our society, we must step out of our studios and give of our time and energy. Anything I find myself lacking in or need help with to accomplish my task as web-editor is supported by others. What I have given is little compared to what I have gained. Connection and collaboration have always been at the heart of my work. I am delighted to expand that connection to 603 amazing artists in 67 countries! IAPMA Members - Open call for the Paper Alive Congress! Deadline: February 15 The open call for Paper Alive! Congress lectures, demonstrations, panels, workshops, and artworks will be closing soon. Please submit using the appropriate format as indicated on the website. Be sure to be logged in as a member to view the page www.iapma.info/announcements . Paper fulfills a variety of roles in our world. To the casual observer, paper can be a passive, single-use substance – something easily discarded after it has served its limited or temporary function. For the artist, the longevity of paper is crucial, as it dictates the lifespan of an artwork. Finally for the paper artist, PAPER is a medium very much ALIVE – malleable, enduring, and even assertive – and it is precisely these characteristics that we highlight during the 2023 IAPMA Congress in Dresden, PAPER ALIVE! . #opencall #paperart #paperartist #iapma #handmadepaper #callforpaperart #paperalivecongress #germanyopencall #papermaking #papermaker #iapmamembers #papierkunst #papierkunstwerk #paperalive #iapmacongress2023 #artistsofinstagram

New Workshop - "Embroidered Artist Books" (United States) The workshop takes place from August 03, 2023 until August 04, 2023. Workshop Details Embroidery is traditionally practiced on fabric; however, it can be an extraordinary and surprising way to embellish prints, photographs, or even artist books. In this workshop, with IAPMA Members Michelle Wilson (@michellewilsonprojects ) and Anne Beck (@landlookersociety) we will begin by looking at examples of artists who embroider on paper, and then move on to a discussion of the necessary delicacy and techniques for stitching on paper and begin by making an embroidered paper "sampler." With this as a foundation, we will progress to making simple book structures and create an embroidered artist book. New Exhibition - "Ras Al Khaimah Fine Arts Festival" (United Arab Emirates) February 03, 2023 - March 28, 2023. Featuring IAPMA Member Masarratfatima Sulaimani and other Artists Opening Hours February Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday 9 am - 6 pm Friday and Saturday 9 am - 11 am March Tuesday to Sunday 9 am - 6 pm Closed on Mondays Location Jazirat Al Hamra azirah Al Hamra Ras Al Khaimah Ras Al Khaimah Fine Arts Festival (RAKFAF), a nonprofit community arts festival designed to showcase the work of local and emerging artists, photographers, and filmmakers and engage the community through a diverse calendar of cultural and creative programming. As a part of artist in Residence programme. Masarratfatima Sulaimani will exhibit her solo exhibition during the festival. The installation titled 'Footprints' is a celebration of the relationship between nature and humankind. Inspired by these elements, the installation explores the ongoing dialogue between these two entities, as one continues to take over the other—like water washing over footprints—and yet neither stops moving. The artist's intent behind this piece was to create a reflection on the common characteristics and duality of both elements: both being so strong yet equally fragile. It also highlights how our presence on earth affects nature, and vice versa: we leave our marks on our surroundings as we pass through them, but those marks will eventually wash away or be reclaimed by nature in turn. The installation is made of paper by hand cutting it and for some parts- papers are hand-made from plants found in Ras Al Khaimah. Each piece is uniquely created to create the impression of a trail through a surrealistic representation of nature and man-made spaces. Material: hand made paper, hand cut Paper and branches. #cutpaper #papercutting #handmadepaper #papermaking #papermaker #rasalkhaimah #rasalkhaimahartfestival #markmaking #rakfaf #paperart #paperartist #iapmamember

👉UPCOMING EXHIBITION - United States When PRINT Meets PAPER👈 Event Dates: January 17th - April 21st, 2023 Artist: Robert C. Williams Museum of Papermaking Reception: Friday, March 17, 2023, 6 pm - 8 pm Opening Hours: Monday to Fridays 9 am - 5pm Closed Saturdays and Sundays Location: Robert C. Williams Museum of Papermaking 500 Tenth Street NW Atlanta, GA 30332 More Information: Curated by Georgia Deal, When PRINT Meets PAPER focuses on artists working at the intersection of print and paper. This show includes the work of Melissa Harshman, Kelly Taylor Mitchell, Marilyn Propp, Gretchen Schermerhorn and Georgia Deal. Each artist approaches the “marriage” of paper and print in unique ways, some coming from the lexicon of print and others from a primary focus and love of hand papermaking. It can be argued that a commonality connects the works, with the origins of printmaking historically addressing social, political and narrative themes. 👉UPCOMING WORKSHOP - United States👈 Embroidered Artist Books Event Dates: August 3rd - August 4th 2023 Workshop Details: Embroidery is traditionally practiced on fabric; however, it can be an extraordinary and surprising way to embellish prints, photographs, or even artist books. In this workshop, with IAPMA Members Michelle Wilson (@michellewilsonprojects) and Anne Beck (@landlookersociety) we will begin by looking at examples of artists who embroider on paper, and then move on to a discussion of the necessary delicacy and techniques for stitching on paper and begin by making an embroidered paper "sampler." With this as a foundation, we will progress to making simple book structures and create an embroidered artist book. Seeking Internship

Of Interest Current Issues

I am a Danish/Spanish agriculture student from Kalø global organic farming school in Denmark. My studies center on natural farming and papermaking. I started making paper a year ago in a workshop with Anne Vilsbøll. It is my goal to become a professional artist in papermaking. Beginning in January 2023, I am available to travel anywhere in the world for a long internship. My dream is to learn about growing plants for paper, and to learn innovative ways to use them.

Kerber Verlag, Contemporary Art
ISBN:         978-3-7356-0133-9

28,00 Euro  (34,80 CHF)

The IAPMA menbers Bara Lehmann-Schulz and Kathrin Biffi-Frey have been using Paper for many years, to express and shape objects, images and installations. In 2005 – 2013 they created temporary installations in the Maggia river bed, in Swiss Tessin, using Paper and a few aids. This experimental work within a landscape shaped by glacial erosion used paper, light, and the weather, as well as standing and flowing water, and has characterised this project. It is these simultaneously transient and eternal, soft and hard, static and moving elements that make their work so fascinating.

The book is available via book stores or from the authors (according to prior agreement)

Bridge made from Paper

May 26, 2015 • 08:35 UTC

Of Interest

No glue. No cables. No steel reinforcements. The only thing keeping this bridge intact is, well, physics.
If you happened to be strolling across the Grisedale Valley—a ridiculously picturesque piece of land in Cumbria—over the past two weeks, you probably saw what looks like something out of a Monument Valley fever dream. A blindingly bright red bridge spanning a thin creek, made of nothing except thousands of sheets of paper. About 22,000 sheets, according to The Chronicle.
It’s called PaperBridge, and it’s the work of a UK artist named Steve Messam, who was commissioned by the area’s culture council to install it this spring.

Limp bindings from Tallinn

May 02, 2014 • 11:19 UTC

Market

The Tallinn City Archives have a voluminous collection of limp bindings in long-stitch, chain-stitch and tacketing. This technique was used mainly when binding simple bands for daily use, such as registers, accounts and notes but has also occurred in more important works. In the book, "Limp Bindings from Tallinn", eight of the bands are presented together with thorough technical descriptions. Hopefully, you will be inspired to develop new variations.
The book, in offset print, is printed in 600 copies on Multidesign Original white 150-gram paper and has a protective cover in Curious Touch, 250 grams. The design of the 48-page book is inspired by medieval writings and is illustrated by artist Jordi Arkö.
The book can be ordered by my mail monica@langwe.se I will then give instruction how to pay via PayPal.
The price of the book is $ 50 including postage, any import fees will be paid by the customer.
