Sumie Matsuura

Japan

My work is based on my old memories. I love Japanese paper sliding door Shoji which allows light to come through by using thin paper. Japanese have used paper for architecture in various cases for [more than / about] eight hundred years. When I matched paper and silver leaf that is an old Japanese painting material, these came to demonstrate multiple phenomena. I have represented contemporary themes, for example, an environmental problem, a lie of nation and others with the old material and technique in my work, paying attention not to lose the beauty of paper work.
