As a poet, painter, and artist’s book maker, I first came to pulp painting in 2017, when I attended a course in Western paper making with American artist John Gerard, an ex-pat like me. I was instantly entranced, immediately sensing I had found my medium. Here was a means to marry my love of the word (poetry) and the image (painting) to make artist's books. Since then I have returned to Gerard Paperworks annually in my quest to develop a unique body of work with pulp painting.

My inspiration has always been natural phenomena, as manifested in both the microcosm and the macrocosm. For many years my garden pond has provided the perfect laboratory for observation and artistic experimentation. The seasons’ cyclical transformations in the pond teach me about birth and growth, decline and death — a universe in miniature.

In the last two years, I have made painting expeditions to Iceland and Alaska. The arctic's ominous rawness, untameability, unaccountability and fragility fascinate me – as does the unexpected beauty found there. These vast boreal landscapes speak to me of the macrocosm, inspiring awe and humility in the face of wilderness, Mother Nature's iron laws, her unhinged violence, and her indifference to humankind.
