PULP Realism
The work on show is the result of artistic research on the formal and physical properties of cellulose as an expressive medium. Utilizing sculptural techniques and collage, the works take on an appearance that blurs the lines between painting, relief and sculpture.
The works have been exhibited together under the title PULP Realism,
a reference to Alberto Burri's Material Realism in that it aims to highlight the centrality of the material used; cellulose PULP. At the same time, PULP becomes a metaphor for dichotomies around values we attribute to artistic creations, as well as culture in general, through the power of marketing. In this way, while adopting Burri’s Realism, (‘what you see is what you get’), the works become innately linked to aspects in our contemporary reality. The large-scale, cellulose works were carried out during periods of extreme heat during summers beginning from 2017. In this way, even the modus operandi for the creation of these works has been dictated by the transformational context in which we are currently living.
