FENGXIAN MUSEUM
Built between 2017 – 2019, Fengxian Museum covers more than 20,000 square meters and is located in Shanghai, Fengxian district near Jinhai Lake – one of the three largest artificial lakes in Shanghai. The modern museum features three interconnected buildings (A, B, and C) which inherit several exhibition areas. The comprehensive museum complex building serves not only for exhibitions, but is also as a hub for academic exchanges, protection and research about Chinese cultural heritage.
Fengxian Museum intricately showcases Fengxian's rich history, which dates back to the Neolithic Era (10,000 BC to c. 2,000 BC). The Museum has separated its exhibitions into distinct sections that provide unique insights into the regional and Chinese history and heritage. This includes the museum's History Hall and Haitang Hall. “Haitang” refers to man-made tidal dykes that act as crucial barriers along the coastal strip.
Fengxian Museum's Haitang Hall delves into the construction logic, evolution, and the impact on Shanghai's social and economic development. In addition to its permanent exhibitions, Fengxian Museum hosts the Shanghai Paper Art Biennale and temporary exhibitions, showcasing a diverse range of cultural artifacts and historical narratives.
Fengxian Museum also offers educational programs and interactive experiences to captivate visitors and promote a deeper understanding of Fengxian's cultural heritage. On May 18, 2024, the Fengxian Museum was added to China's list of "national first-grade museums," the highest classification for museums in the country.
