The bespoke paper art studio JUDiTH+ROLFE was launched in 2016 by Daphne Lee. Lee was born in Singapore and had a decade-long career as an architect in New York City before unexpectedly discovering her love of paper art following a move to the Twin Cities. She is a self-taught paper artist whose art is influenced by her background in architecture, design and photography.
The signature technique of using strips of paper that are individually glued down on their edges is a unique approach to quilling. Traditional quilling or paper filigree consists of rolled paper strips manipulated into various decorative shapes, which are then used to create an image. In JUDiTH+ROLFE’s artwork, rather than using those shapes, each strip of paper is treated as its own line. The dimensional paper artwork is inspired by nature, flora, architecture and geometry. The depth of the artwork creates dynamic views that continually change depending on the viewer’s perspective. Shadows are an integral element in the artwork, which transforms based on the position of the light.
