Fenneke is a visual artist and maker working in mixed media, creating contemporary artists’ books, book objects, papercuts and paper sculptures from her home studio in Banchory, Scotland. These are all one-off pieces and can be organic, dynamic, quiet, powerful, informative, delicate, vibrant, conceptual, experimental or sculptural.
The versatility of paper and the amount of possibilities it offers ignites a continuous flow of ideas in her to experiment with, to learn from and to push the boundaries of my creativity. Using and combining various techniques such as printmaking, digital processes, papercutting, paperfolding and bookbinding fills her with excitement.
As a keen sea kayaker and mountaineer, Fenneke gets inspiration from the textures, patterns, colours, tones and shapes in the great outdoors. When out there in the elements, she feels a deep inner connection with herself and the world around her. She wants to hold on to that experience by expressing this connection into a tangible piece of work and make that journey again, this time being guided purely by her intuition. Fenneke's interest in architecture, design and construction also influences the way a certain project is approached. It will then be meticiously planned by doing research, making sketches and prototypes. By using different methods, processes and styles, she wants to show people what you can do with such a simple yet effective material.
Her artists' books have been exhibited at Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh (2022, 2021, 2018), Upright Gallery, Edinburgh (2022, 2021, 2020), various libraries in Denver, USA (2019), Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair (2021) and Bankside Gallery, London (2017). In 2018, Fenneke received the Visual Artist and Craft Maker Award by Creative Scotland for a 2-week non-toxic printmaking residency in Massachussetts, USA.
Two books are held in public collections; one at The National Libraries of Scotland and one at Edinburgh College of Art, Special Collections.
Fenneke loves sharing her passion for paper with others and teaches workshops for various art groups. At the moment she is mentoring an emerging artist for a year who graduated in Contemporary Art Practice via Society of Scottish Artists mentoring programme that has received funding from Creative Scotland.
